Mokontafé Sako, born in 1934 in Mali, was a celebrated singer from a prominent griot family. She became a leading figure in Mandingue music, particularly in the “bamananfoly” style, which is central to Bambara culture. Rising to fame in the decades following Mali’s independence in 1960, Sako was a founding member of the Ensemble Instrumental National du Mali. Her work played a vital role in preserving Malian musical traditions, making her a cultural icon and one of the great divas of her time.
